Olympic Champion/Politician in São Paulo, Brazil, to be Investigated for Corruption

On February 21, 2013, O Estado de São Paulo reported that Olympic Champion and São Paulo city legislator Aurélio Miguel (PR) will be investigated by the legislature for corruption.  This measure also marks the first time in 14 years that the city’s Magistrate Office endorsed the measure, giving strength to a growing case for the prosecution.  Miguel, a 1988 Olympic gold medalist in judo, is accused of accepting bribes from several shopping malls in return for omitting irregularities with their operations.  The investigation stems from accusations levied by Toninho Véspoli (PSOL), who charged that Miguel has extorted representatives from the same malls over the years for favors.  Read Article
