Brazil: Attorney General Presents New Charge against Renan Calheiros

On January 28, 2013, Gazeta do Povo reported that Roberto Gurgel, Brazil’s Attorney General, has created a case against Federal Senator Renan Calheiros (PMDB-AL), under investigation for his actions since 2007.  Calheiros is a favorite to become President of the Federal Senate; however, he has been in this place before.  In 2007, Calheiros stepped down from the position after it was discovered that he was using money from a lobbyist to pay a pension to a child he fathered with a mistress.  Gurgel did not comment on the specifics of the charge, and Calheiros suspects that it is a political plot to keep him from leadership in the Senate, whose elections will be held next month.  Read Article
