Nuevo Laredo, Mexico: Capture of Z-40 Could Lead the Sinaloa Cartel to Seek Border Hegemony

From Siwissinfo.ch on July 29, 2013- The capture of the Zetas leader, Miguel Angel Trevino also known as Z-40, could lead to a Sinaloan attempt to consolidate border control. Leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Joaquin Guzman, who has been at large since his prison escape in 2001, could take advantage of the situation and seek to take Nuevo Laredo from the Zetas. Analysts see two possibilities coming from this. First, the Sinaloa and Zetas cartels could restart the violence that was seen during the Calderon administration leading to more civilian deaths and atrocities. However, others have suggested that if the Sinaloa cartel was able to gain control of Nuevo Laredo there could be more peace in Mexico. A hegemonic Sinaloa cartel would not have to use as much violence to control its drug routes and the Sinaloa cartel already has a better reputation for being less violent towards civilians than the Zetas.
