Mayor Faces Misuse of Funds Charges in Alagoas, Brazil

On January 25, 2013, G1 reported that Arlindo Garrote, the mayor of Estrela, turned himself into police this morning.  He faces charges of diverting R$1 million in public money.  Also implicated are several ex-cabinet members as well as his mother, the former mayor of the town.  The investigations reported that between 2009 and 2011 the mayor participated in incidents of fraud in which the mayor and several cohorts corrupted the bidding process for various public works projects.  The state’s Attorney General requested that Garrote lose his position as well as be barred from public office for five years.  Read Article
