Highway Police in Brazil Seize Six Million Cigarettes in One Bust

On March 5, 2013, O Estado de São Paulo reported that the Federal Highway Police seized five trucks on the highway in São Paulo state on Tuesday, netting a grand total of six million contraband cigarettes.  According to police, the cigarettes are from Paraguay.  The bust was made in the region of Presidente Prudente, in the extreme west of the state.  The smugglers confessed to the crime; however, one also tried to escape, but was quickly apprehended.  The cigarettes carried a street value of R$18 million, had they reached their destination safely.  Read Article
