Semi-submersible found in Colombia, thought to be used in drug trafficking

The Colombian Navy found a semi-submersible water vessel in a jungle area 64 kilometers south of Buenaventura, buried under thick vegetation near the mouth of the Cajambre river. The device is thought to have been used for trafficking drugs along the river, the Colombian Ministry of Justice and Law states. It is about 7.5 meters long and 1.5 meters wide and can carry at least 5 tons of cocaine. The submersible is unmanned and must be towed from another boat, making it nearly undetectable when it is submerged in transit. About two kilometers away from where it was discovered, officials also found a speedboat with the capacity to carry 10 tons of cocaine. This is the first semi-submersible and the 10th “go-fast” speed boat found in Colombia so far in 2012. Swampy jungle areas make Colombia one of the regions encountering high rates of drug trafficking activity. Read Article
