Brazilian Nightclub Fire Leaves 232 Dead in Rio Grande do Sul
On January 27, 2013, O Estado de São Paulo reported that a fire at a nightclub in Santa Maria, in the center of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, left 232 people dead. It already is considered one of the worst tragedies in the history of the state. According to security in the nightclub, between 1,000 and 2,000 people were in the nightclub when the fire occurred. The majority were adolescents. Witnesses confirmed that the fire started due to a pyrotechnics show gone wrong. Read Article
