Be Warned: Counterfeit Scam in Colombian Taxis

•According to El Colombiano’s Medellín section, one type of counterfeit scam involved woman who handed a taxi driver a 20,000 peso bill to pay her 14,000 peso fare.
•The driver claimed that to the victim that the bill was false and returned it.
• As the woman had no other 20,000 bills, the driver asked her how much she had and settled for 8,000.
• However the driver exchanged the original 20,000 for a counterfeit 20,000 peso bill.
•Another counterfeit money taxi scam involved two passengers who attempted to pay the driver with a 10000 peso bill. The drive claimed the bill to be false and asked to see a 50,000 note. When one of the victims became suspicious the driver handed back the 50,000 note to the passengers outside the vehicle and fled the scene.
•Many of these types of crimes are not reported because of the small amount of money involved.
•The Metropolitan Police arrested a taxi driver on March 27th with 620,000 pesos in counterfeit bills in the Terminal del Norte who ran the same kind of scam.Read Article
