Ten Year-Old Boy Killed in Anti-Crack Operation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

On January 10, 2013, O Estado de São Paulo reported that a boy was killed this morning after he was run over by a car while escaping from police during an anti-drug operation. The boy, identified as Rafael, was running from police on the far end of the Avenida Brasil, returning from the Nova Holanda favela. He was believed to be a drug user and, according to friends, lived in the Parque União, close to the Avenida Brasil. The motorist who hit Rafael fled the scene without attending to the victim. Police have worked since early 2012 to secure certain favelas where drug lords and users have been concentrated in the past.  Read Article
