A police force of at least 150 people and 40 trucks surprised the San Germán community in Colombia around 6 a.m. on May 30, 2012, where they had organized a strike against narcos. The armed police began by entering residences they considered to be suspicious. The preliminary report states that 17 people were arrested, many of whom attempted to hide mini-factories of cocaine in their backyards. Ten drug prosecutors were involved in the operation, El Dia reports. The main objective was the capture of a central Colombian drug lord who used a clandestine airstrip in the area to send drug shipments to Brazil. Intelligence reports show there were three illegal airstrips in the area used by drug traffickers, although the main one was destroyed in the operation. Tear gas was used to break up a mob of villagers who were throwing rocks and attempting to block police from using the main road. Read Article
