Parana, Brazil: 23 Suspects Arrested for Corruption and Conspiracy

On August 15, 2013 Globo reported that 23 people; delegates, researchers, support agents, and traders, were sent to court by the Public Ministry for corruption and conspiracy. Investigators report the gang attempted to receive money from merchants in the junkyard sector, collecting up to R$30,000 a month with registration fees costing R$50,000. The arrest is a result of Operation “Vortex” initiated in April of this year to combat police corruption. At the time, three police officers were detained for possession of an unregistered weapon.
