According to the Fire Department, 50 percent of buildings in the city does not meet safety standards. This is of concern to the public, taking into account what happened in Guayaquil after the fire in the building The Chambers, on 2 July. “The warning is given, and what happened there can be repeated in any city,” said Juan Rivera, a businessman who yesterday morning paid their taxes in the Fire Department. Relief agency currently is conducting a census in buildings over four stories, to see if they meet all fire safety standards or other disasters.
Only two have stairs. Angel Moreira, the technical department of the firefighters, said that only two buildings in the city have external stairs to help evacuate people in case of fire, these are the Rodriguez Zambrano Hospital and Social Security. “After these, none have this important standard,” he said. He said there are structures such as The Watcher who have no evacuation plan, including a visit three years ago made this place, corridor doors were padlocked. Read Article
