Expatriate Warning Ecuador: Make sure your papers are in order

The following information was submitted from an expatriate residing in Vilcabamba Ecuador. This particular case has not been confirmed it is still wise advice to remember to follow all immigration rules.

One question many visiting Ecuador often ask is – What happens if you overstay your visa? The prudent answer to this is – don’t let it happen.

VILCABAMBA ECUADOR
We have received am unconfirmed report from an expatriate that Ecuador’s immigration police are checking people’s papers throughout the area. The source stated that on Saturday, October 5, 2013, he was at the town center with another U.S. expatriate. The source went inside a store to purchase a beer and when he returned, the other expatriate was missing. A group in the area informed the American expatriate that Immigration Police stopped the defendant who was discovered to have overstayed his visa by a month and he was detained. He also submitted that the immigration police seem to have been making rounds every few months. The informer believes that the expatriate was transported to Loja and is awaiting deportation.

Ecuador takes immigration matters very seriously and it is not wise to overstay your visa for any reason.
