In the middle of the night on Tuesday, bus number three of Cooperativa de Transportes Ecuador pulled out of it’s terminal in Guayaquil on Avenida de Americas, and headed towards Quito with 40 passengers. According to Elcomercio.com, when the bus reached Tres Postes just northwest of Guayaquil, four passengers drew weapons and threatened to kill the passengers. The bus was diverted to another area where two more assailants hopped on board. Furthermore, a child who appeared to be about six-years old helped in the assault in locating cell phones and other items belonging to the victims. During the assault which lasted about three hours, victims were robbed and beaten. Passengers informed authorities that they believed the ticket vendor at the terminal was working with the assailants. They related that some of the people getting on board did not have tickets. The preliminary investigation showed that some of the names on the passenger list appeared to be fictitious. Passengers also claimed that it seemed the child may have been hiding on the bus prior to exiting Guayaquil. The security cameras at the private terminal according to employees of the bus company stated the system had not worked in six-months. Read Article
