Rate of traffic accidents in 2015 in Ecuador recorded a reduction of 8%

Quito, Jan 4 (Andes) .- The rate of traffic accidents in Ecuador, in 2015, posted an 8% reduction compared to 2014, said Monday the deputy director of the National Traffic Agency, Alexis Eskandani.

“This reduction in the rate of accidents has been achieved by the effective control that has been done at the national level,” said the official highlighting the joint work between the police and the autonomous governments (municipalities).

In 2014 a total of 38,658 accidents were recorded on different roads of the South American country, while in 2015 the figure dropped to 35,701, showing a reduction of 8%. Read Article

The same percentage was reduced compared to deaths from accidents as there were 2,322 dead last year and in 2014, the figure fell to 2,138.

The official also stressed that the death rate per 100 thousand inhabitants in 2015 was 12.94, while in 2014 it was 14.49.

“Different operating on main roads and bus terminals have allowed it in the past five years have the lowest in terms of mortality rate per 100 thousand inhabitants,” he said.

Eskandani noted that among the main causes of traffic accidents are inattention while driving either phones or devices installed in cars; drive exceeding speed limits; not respect traffic signals; and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Regarding accidents recorded in the last holidays of Christmas and New Year, the deputy director of ANT said that as many accidents have been caused by drivers of private vehicles, so he called on citizens to respect traffic signals.

A total of 38 deceased left a toll of the Christmas holiday by different incidents occurring in the country’s roads, while in the New Year, the figure was 58 dead, according to figures from the ANT. Read Article
