Ecuador: 12 years since last commercial airline accident with deaths

elcomercio.com reported In Ecuador, the last crash of a commercial flight, with fatalities, occurred 12 years ago. The aircraft from a local company, with 92 passengers on board, crashed against a flank of the Cumbal volcano, in Colombian territory. The flight departed at 10:30 from January 28, 2002 from Mariscal Sucre airport. After 25 minutes it crashed in an area called Pistejo. That day he was covering the Quito-tulcan – Cali route. However, that was not the greatest air disaster. On July 11, 1983, a commercial plane with Quito & Cuenca crashed seconds before arriving at the destination airport. The unit were traveling 119 people, the highest number of deaths in a plane crash in the country. The plane took off at 07:00 from Quito and crashed into a hill near the battalion Calderon, located in the North of the Azuay capital.
