Ecuador: 10 deaths 80,000 impacted by rains so far in 2012

Rainfall started in January and still not stop. The government of Rafael Correa declared a state of emergency in six provinces. There millions in losses. About three thousand of the victims and survivors living in shelters, 1,554 houses and other relatives, said the National Risk Management (SNGR, Civil Defense) in a report provided to the AFP.

The document also revealed that 186 houses were destroyed due to torrential rains in the coastal provinces of Esmeraldas (northwest and bordering with Colombia), Guayas, Los Rios, Manabi, El Oro and Loja the Andean (the last two south and border with Peru), which were declared in emergency state for nearly three weeks.

The rainfall also affect other provinces. The Minister of Production, Santiago Leon, told reporters that “there are 34 thousand hectares of crops lost and 9 000 hectares affected,” according to a census conducted in 17 000 farms in the provinces in a state of emergency, without regard to Esmeraldas.
