Ecuador: At Least 12 Deaths Since January due to Rains

eluniverso.com reported at least twelve deaths, several due to landslides, and 4,945 affected families have been impacted during the rainy season in Ecuador since January according to the Secretariat for Risk Management (SGR).

Due to the torrential downpours that hit the country, 539 people were affected, while 981 are in shelters when they lose their homes or seek refuge for security, according to a balance sheet of the agency since January 1, 2017.

He added that 106 houses were destroyed by landslides and floods and another 4,543 are affected.

The SGR noted that 22 of the 24 Ecuadorian provinces are ravaged by heavy rains, with coastal Manabí – hit by a deadly earthquake last April – the most affected by the winter.

The downpours have caused landslides, overflowing rivers, flooding of villages and damage to some roads.

Due to the emergency situation, the Secretary of Risks declared in orange alert (previous to the red one, of maximum dangerousness) to the provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabí, Guayas, Santa Elena, Los Ríos, El Oro and Loja. Read Article
