Azuay Province (Cuenca Ecuador) Carnaval 2013: five dead, 250,000 tourists

A partnership between the governor of Azuay, Police, Fire Brigade, Red Cross, Armed Forces, Ministry of Health, Department of Risk Management, Ministry of Tourism and Ministry ECU-911 Transportation allowed a contingency plan to run five days of Carnival holidays in the province of Azuay (southern Andes).

With this operation, was deployed a contingent of 1,593 people who were involved at various points as the toll road Gualaceo Paute Basin Highway, Azogues, The Rest, The Cape, “Y” Cumbe, Pigs, and Tarqui “Y” Sayausí.

Hence, the result of the holiday, compared to the previous year, was different. There were 196 detainees, of which 34 were for drunkenness, 12 for speeding, 16 and 18 scandals of domestic violence.

Azuayas authorities attributed these results to the articulation and coordination of public entities. In that sense, this year there were fewer traffic accidents. In 2012 there were 14, now recorded 11. Something similar happened with the statistics of casualties and victims.

There were 26 wounded and five dead people. Also carried out operations in urban and rural areas of the province. But on this background, the results emphasize tourism.

According to the relevant ministry, 250,000 people visited Azuay. A total of 50,000 tourists were mobilized daily by the province. Its provincial capital (Cuenca), the third largest city in Ecuador, received the highest number of visitors. Read Article
