lahora.com.ec REPORTED…Moni Pizani, of UN Women, acknowledged that much progress has been made in Ecuadory, but that there is still a way to go in the fight against this phenomenon, in which 6 out of 10 women have experienced some form of violence. He said that the statistical data to date do not reflect growth or decrease in the phenomenon of violence, because there is not enough historical data to make that claim.

According to data from the Automatic Judicial Procedures System (Satje), between August 2014 and September 2016, 116,051 cases of violence against women were entered, of which 4,024 were physical violence. Of the total, 91,790 were convicted.

The Judiciary Council also revealed some statistics in which it is ensured that between August 2014 and August 2016 104 cases of femicide were entered, of which 40 were sentenced. In addition, 78 trials were received for attempted femicide and in 28 of them a sentence was issued.

However, the figures of the Judicial Council do not match those of the Attorney General’s Office, which states that since the Integral Criminal Code (COIP), the Public Prosecutor’s Office has received 108 news of crimes for the criminal type of femicide. Between August and December 2014, 21 complaints were registered, in 2015, 53 and in 2016, until August, 34. Of these, 31 convictions have been obtained, of which 34 have been executed and 12 have been challenged.

Regarding the attempted femicide, in the same period of time, 129 complaints have been received, of which 59 have an accusatory opinion from the Public Prosecutor’s Office and there are also 23 first instance sentences. Read Article
