Brazil: 7 Suspects Detained for Diverting R$47.5 million in Public Funds

estadao.com.br reported on September 3, 2013 that the Federal Police launched “Operation Pronto Emprego” to combat the diversion of public funds (R$47.5 million) granted by the Ministry of Labor and Employment. The police arrested seven suspects including an aid to the secretary of the Ministry of Labor who was arrested in a hotel in Sao Paulo with R$30,000 in bribes. The diverted funds were to be used for an NGO designed to create and maintain public employment centers in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. The NGO was created in 2002 in response to the issue of unemployment in Brazil. The suspects face charges for money laundering, corruption, conspiracy, and embezzlement. Read Article
