Ecuador: Comptroller reports some funds, donations for 2016 earthquake not used for victims

elcomercio.com reported the comptroller’s office determined that funds allocated for the earthquake victims (April 2016) were used for other purposes. The investigation revealed that in some instances money was used for unjustified expenditures. The Armed Forces was charged with the responsibility distributing donations.

On instance shows that $6.3 million derived from a loan by the Inter-American Development Bank was incorrectly used by the military for vehicle maintenance, search and rescue equipment, combat food rations and other things. Those funds were not intended for those expenditures. The military claims the expenditures were justified.
