Brazil: Renan Calheiros Elected President of Federal Senate for Second Time

On February 1, 2013, G1 reported that with 56 votes, Renan Calheiros (PMDB-AL) was formally elected as the new President of the Federal Senate.  This election comes amid a hotly contested race with fellow Senator Pedro Taques (PDT-MT), who received just 18 votes.  Four other votes were for other candidates or null votes.  It marks Calheiros’ second time occupying the post of President of the Federal Senate:  he stepped down in 2007 after suspicions of accepting money from lobbyists to pay a mistress with whom he had a child.  Calheiros thanked outgoing President José Sarney (PMDB-AP), citing him as a visionary and instrumental in the country’s transition from dictatorship to democracy.  Read Article
