Brazil: A Second Challenger Arises to Face Calheiros in Federal Senate Elections

On January 16, 2013, O Diário reported that Pedro Taques (PDT-MT) will run as a challenger for the President of the Federal Senate, the second one reported in the race to compete against favorite Renan Calheiros (PMDB-AL).  Taques said that if an independent candidate does not arise from the PMDB, he will run to serve as that independent voice.  Taques also said that he would not ask fellow challenger and friend Randolfe Rodrigues (PSOL-AP) to step down.  Leaders of Democratas and PSB, each with four members in the Federal Senate, have yet to determine which candidate they would support.  Read Article
