Former Mayor in Paraná, Brazil, Loses Political Rights Until 2020

On January 16, 2013, Folha de São Paulo reported that electoral courts in Paraná have suspended the political rights of José Borba (PP) until October of 2020.  Borba was the mayor of Jandaia do Sul, a city about 400 kilometers from the state capital of Curitiba.  Borba was convicted on Tuesday for abuse of power after he helped devise a scheme in the latest local elections to benefit the current mayor, Dejair Valério (PTC), and his deputy, Leandro de Souza Silva (PSD).  He also faces fines of roughly R$570,000 for his crimes.  Read Article
