55 escape from prison, senior prison official blamed for negligence, relieved of duty

dailymessenger.com.pk reported that Ecuador’s Interior Minister Jose Serrano says 55 inmates have escaped from an overcrowded jail in Ecuador with the ‘express participation’ of prison guards.
The jailbreak took place on Sunday at the detention facility in the capital Quito and 20 escapees were quickly recaptured, authorities said.
Serrano accused a senior prison official of “negligence” and said the prison director together with several officials had been “relieved of their duties.” According to the interior minister, among the fugitives included an inmate who should have been jailed at an adjoining facility, however, the convict was likely moved to detention center to facilitate his escape.
