Winter in Colombia impacting Coffee Harvests

Winter Begins to Affect Colombian Coffee Harvests
• Caracol.com.co reports that production has decreased 19% from April of last year due to the rainy season and “la roya*”.
• Luis Genaro Muños, head of the National Federation of Coffee Growers (Fedcafé), called for better fertilization and protection against the disease.
• The production in the last 12 months has increased 28% compared to that of the period between May 2009 and April 2010 to 9.5 million 60 kilo sacks.

*La Roya de Cafeta (literally the rust of the coffee tree) is a disease caused by Hemileia vastatrix and causes premature falling of coffee leaves. Coupled with poor fertilization and other conditions, la roya can be devastating to coffee harvests.
