Violent Crimes Increase 7.8% in Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 2012

On January 23, 2013, R7 reported that the rate of violent crimes in the state of Minas Gerais rose 7.8% in 2012 to 71,737 incidents, from 66,061 in 2011.  The state’s Social Defense Ministry calculated the result using the number of murders, attempted murders, rapes, attempted rapes, robbery, kidnappings and extortion under sequestration.  Ministry Secretary Rômulo de Carvalho Ferraz commented that the state is committed in 2013 to combating crime with R$400 million in investments and will focus its efforts significantly on arms control, as it seized over 20,000 illegal guns last year.  Read Article
