Venezuela: pre-election violence leaves numerous people injured near airport

Television footage showed dozens of supporters of the two sides in a kind of pitched battle outside the airport of Puerto Cabello, in central western oil country, where he planned to get the single candidate of the opposition, Henrique Capriles, for a campaign.
Puerto Cabello has a mayor-government, but the government is one of the strongholds of the opposition. “We were surprised by a shower of stones, fireworks, petrol bombs (…) generating a lot of injuries,” state television said the mayor of Puerto Cabello, Rafael Lacava. The official said President Hugo Chavez supporters were attacked by opponents, although command Capriles members assured the press that the ruling blocked access to the airport and forced the candidate to reach the place in a fishing boat.
