Venezuela, New Aviation Union

A new aviation union has been established to bolster the fortunes of workers in Venezuela’s national flag airline.

The union, Sindicato de Trabajadores y Trabajadoras de CONVIASA (SITRACON), was established following a field trip to Caracas by ITF civil aviation section secretary Gabriel Mocho. He was backed by Alicia Castro from the Argentine aviation affiliate Asociación Argentina de Aeronavegantes and ITF executive board member and Francisco Torrealba, president of the Federacion de Trabajadores Ferroviarios de Venezuela. The aim of the trip was to support unorganised workers in the Conviasa airline. As a result, some 200 workers participated in the founding assembly of SITRACON, the airline’s first union, in mid-November; one of its initial decisions was to affiliate to the ITF. Read Article
