Venezuela – Free speech defender assaulted in parliament as more gag laws are voted

Reporters Without Borders calls on President Hugo Chávez to publicly condemn the physical attack on Carlos Correa, the head of the NGO Espacio Público, that took place yesterday at the entrance to the National Assembly. The attack comes amid a government campaign to discredit those who defend human rights and civil liberties and as the executive submits a series of repressive bills for parliamentary approval before the current legislature, which has no opposition representatives, expires on 5 January.
