U.N. Investigated Ecuadorian Police, Report Delivered to Council

ElComercio.com reports that the United Nations Human Rights Council received a report by Philip Alston, a U.N. special reporter on extrajudicial executions, concerning cases of unlawful killings by policemen in Ecuador. The Ecuadorian internal investigation unit records 104 deaths by police that were occurred between 2005 and 2010. However, another police unit reports that there were only 83 cases of police caused deaths between 2005 and 2010. The 36 other deaths occurred during criminal operations says Coman-dancia, a police unit. The unit to combat organized crime, ULCO, performed an investigation on rouge police after an incident that left one police officer dead states the U.N. report. There is suspicion within the police force that some police are involved in illegal ‘social cleansing,’ or killing of criminals. Alston’s report proposes an evaluation of police performance by a commission of senior expert chosen by the government.Read Article
