Tungurahua Volcano Ecuador Remains Active

Posted on December 5, 2010 • Filed under: Ecuador

The red alert that was issued earlier today has been downgraded to orange alert by authorities in Ecuador, for Tungurahua Volcano in Banos, Ecuador. While there had been reports that Banos was being evacuated, eye witness account deny that there were any evacuations of Banos proper. One report stated that there was some ash in the city which is unusual when the volcano is active and that things began to settle down at about 3:00 pm local time. There were other reports that there was ash in Ambato and as far away as Guayaquil, Ecuador.

The only evacuations were in an eight mile area around the volcano. Tungurahua is located 85 miles south of Quito, Ecuador.
