Tarqui, Ecuador: 3 Found Guilty of Child Labor Trafficking

On August 24, 2013 El Diario Noticias reported that an Ecuadoran court has handed down a guilty verdict to three individuals accused of human trafficking. Defendants Carlos Aurelio Palma Minda, Juan Pedro Palma Minda and Zoila María Arce Minda were found guilty of exploiting children and adolescents to sell candy apples in Tarqui. The court is expected to announce the prison sentence within the next few days. By law, the guilty defendants face a sentence of 6-9 years, but could face up to 12-16 years if the court determines the presence of aggravating circumstances. Read Article
