Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Carnaval Generates 700 Tons of Trash

On February 13, 2013, O Estado de São Paulo reported that in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the annual Carnaval celebrations generated the most trash ever recorded in the history of the season. Comlurb, the city’s trash collection agency, reported that it picked up 700 tons of trash, compared to 643 last year. The local Polícia Militar also reported that it seized 64 weapons and arrested nearly 350 people over the long weekend. This year’s celebrations also saw some six million partygoers.  Read Article
