Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: 9 Favelas Raided by Police to Combat Drug Trafficking

tribunahoje.com reported on August 2, 2013 that a police operation in nine favelas in the north zone of Rio de Janeiro forced schools and businesses to close, as the operation was an attempt to combat drug trafficking. The favelas raided by police include Cachoeira Grande, Cachoeirinha, Morro do Amor, Gambá, Cotia, Árvore Seca, Barro Preto, Boca do Mato and Barro Vermelho. 200 officers participated in the operation, arresting five suspects and killing one.
