Residents in Florianópolis, Brazil, Complain about Deforestation Practices

On March 26, 2013, Terra reported that residents of the city of Florianópolis, capital city of the state of Santa Catarina, are complaining to authorities over deforestation practices done near Campeche beach. This past weekend residents caught a backhoe digging up protected land, discovering dead animals and permanent damage to nearly 1.5 square kilometers of forest. The Municipal Environmental Foundation of Florianópolis (Floram) confirmed that the machine was operating to dredge the river in the wake of recent floods, as a “preventative” measure.
