Policemen Hurt in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after Trafficker Shootout

On February 22, 2013, O Estado de São Paulo reported that three policemen were injured Thursday night in a series of shootouts that took place between two favelas in Rio de Janeiro.  A local peacekeeping unit was on patrol in Parque Proletário, Zona Norte, when officers attempted to stop a duo on a motorcycle.  The pair fled, shooting at the officers in the process.  The pilot of the motorcycle was arrested and faces charges.  In the neighboring favela, Vila Cruzeiro, shots were exchanged between officers and traffickers.  One policeman was shot in the arm, and two other officers were injured while in pursuit of the traffickers, when their vehicle crashed into a pole.  All three are expected to recover.  Read Article
