Police Operation in Paraná, Brazil, Creates Eighteen Arrest Warrants

On October 24, 2013, Gazeta do Povo reported that the Brazilian Federal Police (PF) has created arrest warrants for eighteen people involved in a cigarette smuggling scheme originating in Paraguay.  Arrest warrants have been issued in several towns in the west of the state of Paraná, as well as Belém, capital of the state of Pará.  The operation, named Operação Dupla Face (Operation Two Face), has been in action for over a year, and police estimate that the smugglers have avoided some R$40 million in taxes to date.  According to the PF, agents have seized over R$30 million in merchandise during the operation, and have caught 35 people.  Read Article
