Police Investigate Environmental Crime in Pará, Brazil

On February 18, 2013, G1 reported that local police are investigating environmental crimes in northeastern Pará, possibly linked to the Renato Chaves Science Center in Ourém. Police are specifically investigating the illegal extraction of sand and gravel. One local farmer said he noticed a white coloration in the water in a nearby creek, and that the water smelled a bit like gas or fuel. Authorities have already questioned two suspects, neither of which claimed involvement in the crime. One testimony did say, however, that extraction for this specific crime may have started in June 2012, when a local business began to sell pebble in Ourém. The investigation continues.  Read Article
