Peru: Operations Against Companies to Halt Child Trafficking

According to Andina.com.pe more than 3,700 Peruvian businesses were inspected nationwide by a joint operation between two government agencies. The operation was to verify that the business did not violate Peruvian laws of human trafficking. Adolfo Alarcon, a director at the Ministry of Labor says that more that two million adolescents between 6 and 17 years are forced into child labor. The director reports that 168 companies in fault were sanctioned due to the operation. Huancavelica has the highest incidence of child labor at 63%. Peru’s minimum working age is 14 years old, but exceptions can be made for some 12 year olds. However, they cannot work for more than 4 hours per day. Andina reports that 422 reports of human trafficking were made in the last two years.
