Paraná, Brazil: 18 Suspects Detained for Diverting Public Funds

Globo reported on August 8, 2013 that the Federal Police arrested 18 suspects in Operation “Synapse” designed to combat a gang accused of diverting funds used for educational purposes in Paraná. The gang is suspected of embezzling about R$ 6.6 million from the Ministry of Education. The gang, investigated since 2012, had signed contracts with civil society organizations in which the money was diverted and used for other purposes. Crimes committed by this gang include conspiracy, corruption, money laundering, and forgery. All documents will thoroughly be invested. Read Article
