Otavalo, Cotacachi Ecuador: human trafficking problem

elnorte.ec reported that Indigenous communities of Otavalo and Cotacachi is where most have seen this type of case. According to a study by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO), “from 2005 to 2011 reported a total of 36 offenses of trafficking. Of these cases, between 2008 and 2011, 7 correspond to Canton Ibarra, 22 to Canton Otavalo and Cotacachi 2 a. Of the 7 cases reported in Ibarra, 5 concerning trafficking for sexual exploitation (of which two were recorded in 2008, one in 2009 and two in 2011). The remaining two are cases of labor exploitation, which occurred in 2009 and 2010 ”

Youth and children are taken to other countries where they are exploited.
Statistics. Currently in the cantons do not have statistics of such cases. “We have no statistical data quantitatively but for the Municipal Government and Council on Children, talk about a serious case for the city,” says Cecilia Cobos, Cantonal Council Executive Secretary for Children and Adolescents of Cotacachi.
