Officers Convicted in Torture and Corrpution Scandal in Amazonas, Brazil

On January 9, 2013, G1 (Globo) reported that a state judge convicted two former police investigators and acquitted a third for their respective roles in a torture and corruption scandal.  Alcinda da Silva Portela and José Juvenal Ferreira Lima were sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for allegedly holding a young man, and then releasing him to his father for cash.  The defendants still have fifteen days to appeal the decision to a higher court; in this case, the Superior Tribunal de Justiça (STJ).  Read Article
