Murder Rate Rises 40% in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2012

On January 26, 2013, G1 reported that for the first time in twelve years, the homicide rate in São Paulo increased in 2012.  Statistics produced by the local government show that the homicide rate jumped 40% last year, coming after a significant fall in the indexes since the year 2000.  São Paulo reported 1,497 murders in 2012, compared to 1,069 in 2011.  The state of São Paulo’s Public Security Ministry reported that the state’s efforts to combat crime between 2000 and 2011 prevented the death of some 61,000 people.  The city also reported a rise in car-related thefts, robbery-murders and rapes.  Read Article
