Mexico: Police Investigating Newspapers Ads Used for Sexual Exploitation

On May 27, 2013 Azteca Noticias reported that Mexican authorities are investigating newspaper ads offering massages and sexual services, on suspicion that the advertising is being used by criminal organizations for the purpose of sexual exploitation. According to the human trafficking division’s chief prosecutor, Juana Camila Bautista Rebollar, these unlawful and misleading ads are being used to exploit victims and coerce them into sex work.

Violators can face up to 2-7 years in prison for using any printed media, electronic or cyber, for posting such unlawful or misleading advertising. Prosecutor Bautista Rebollar stated that there is an ongoing investigation into this type of advertising, and that individuals can report such criminal activities anonymously using the telephone number 5200 9000.
