Lula to be Investigated for Connections to Brazilian Mensalão Scandal

On January 9, 2013, Correio da Manhã reported that ex-President Luíz Inácio Lula da Silva will be investigated by federal prosecutors for ties to the infamous Mensalão scandal.  Marcos Valério, said to be the chief actor of the scandal and sentenced to 40 years in prison, brought forth the charges.  Valério’s testimony, which included charges that Lula endorsed certain payments made by Banco BMG and Banco Rural, was made in September.  He also charges that Lula negotiated campaign contributions from the Portuguese phone company Portugal Telecom to the Workers’ Party (PT), an action illegal in Brazilian electoral law.  Read Article
