Lima, Peru: Police Announce Speed Limit Controls, Increased Fines

According to Peru21.pe officials for the Municipality of Lima have confirmed that more than 1,700 drivers who were fined S/ 432.00 for excessive speed will not receive a discount on their tickets. Maria Jara Risco, manager of the Metropolitan Transportation Department says the objectives of the fines are to generate respect for speed limits by urban drivers and to prevent car and pedestrian accidents. Officials say the speed limit is 60 kilometers on regular streets, 80 kilometers on express highways, 40 kilometers in household areas and 30 kilometers in school zones and hospital areas. Transit police say they carry out speed controls on 13 important roadways in Lima. Transport officials add that statistics show an increase of traffic accidents in Lima.Read Article
