Improved institutions in Guatemala lead to more drug arrests

Recent captures of drug traffickers in Guatemala have been attributed to institutional improvements in the country, which has included a reformatting of investigative bodies, better systems for gathering and analyzing intelligence, and more coordination within and between institutions. According to Agencia Guatemalteca Noticias, these improvements have allowed officials to disband drug trafficking organizations, which has consequently decreased violence throughout the country. Recent captures include the arrest of alleged Sinaloa and Zetas members, as well as local drug dealers. Notable arrests were that of Horst Walter Overdick, alias “El Tigre,” linked to the Zetas; Álvaro Gómez Sánchez, of the Zetas; and Walter Arelio Montejo, alias “Zope,” linked to the Sinaloa cartel.
