JIJI Press reported that ten members of a criminal group have been detained in Ecuador on suspicion of involvement in the December shooting of a Japanese couple, Ecuador’s interior minister Jose Serrano said on Twitter on Wednesday. The minister said Ecuadorian authorities are currently examining seized guns and mobile phones. The couple was on a honeymoon tour in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city. The husband, Tetsuo Hitomi, was killed in the incident, and his wife was seriously injured. A local police source stated that police have not yet confirmed a link between the criminal group and the shooting incident. An official at the Japanese Embassy said there has been no report from the Ecuadorian government.
The suspects were taken into custody on Wednesday morning, and two guns, five vehicles and mobile phones were also seized, according to Serrano. A mobile phone picture posted to Twitter showed a message saying let’s kidnap foreigners without killing them next time. Read Article
